Carpet staples. Do they really need to go? : HomeImprovement

The carpet padding had staples holding it in place. Can I hammer these down or must they be removed? We don't plan on using carpet again. Unsure as of yet what we will put down but certainly not carpet. After a hour of pulling staples out I'd rather just hammer then down if it won't effect things. Thanks and I am sorry for the noob question.
